The reserves returned to the winners list this week after a very difficult 3 week period .The game was played in wet and difficult conditions and as per previous weeks we had managed to scrape together 20 players.
The game on Saturday was again going to be a tough one against scotch who were sitting above us and desperate to keep their final four chances alive. We had just scraped together 22 players with injuries and guys still travelling affecting selection as well as forfeiting the thirds game.
Saturdays reserve game against the top team in Uni Blues was always going to be really difficult just through the fact they have been the best side over the last 3 years. When you are forced to make 10 changes through players being unavailable from the previous week and only having 20 to start the game the challenge had been set. The first quarter was a disaster 8 goals to our 1 goal.
The boys set the scene early in the first going against the breeze with really good intensity ,quick movement and scoreboard pressure. Like all good teams the Old Xaverians came back and dominated the last 12 minutes of the quarter to lead by 24 points at ¼ time. In the second another great quarter where our work rate demonstrated by all players was outstanding majority of the play started with our on ballers in James Mitchell, Ben McKie and Chris Hood.
The first quarter was not a great standard of footy with both teams struggling. When you play bottom teams with no wins you need to make sure you play to your strengths and not to go back to an unacceptable level. Our first 2 goals came in the first 5 minutes and we looked good then the rest of the quarter was not a great standard of footy with both teams making alot of un forced errors. We agreed at 1/4 time we were not running and our lack of accountability was evident.
