OMFC TAKES THE QUADDIE – 4 FLAGS IN ONE YEAR

September 22nd, 2009
OMFC MAKE IT FOUR FROM FOUR

Saturday 19th September shall go down in OMFC history books as one of the truly great days in our history.

The pressure had been building for weeks - four minor premierships had been secured, and the two preceding weeks had seen the 3rds deliver a stunning premiership, followed last week by the Under 19’s. The weight of expectation on all was enormous as we entered the day with both Seniors and Reserves in the Grand Finals.

SENIORS

Having watched the reserves take out the flag, the scene had been set for an unprecedented season of success for OMFC. And the boys started like they meant business - kicking with the aid of a strong breeze the ball was pumped long and often into the forward line, but a somewhat disappointing return of 4.9 for the quarter left Trinity feeling as if they were still a chance of getting into the match. This was especially evident when they snuck forward through clever ball movement into a breeze that seemed to be getting stronger as the game went on, kicking 3 goals in a first quarter that would have had their fans and coaching staff extremely pleased.

Trinity then got their turn with the breeze, and OM’s managed to hold them for most of the quarter. This was turning into a classic arm wrestle, but late goals gave Trinity a 10 point lead at the long break.

The Premiership Quarter
The third quarter has become known in most football clichés as the premiership quarter, and for most of it on Saturday Old Trinity must have thought they were in with a huge chance of over-running OM’s.

With just 5 minutes left, scores were within a kick, and OM’s had struggled to use the wind to advantage, whilst Trinity had managed a couple into the stiff northerly. Finally, OM’s fresh legs, and Trinity playing one man down due to a send off, seemed to make a difference. Four goals in time on, including one after the siren by Hawk, and we were out to a handy lead at the last change. It was as though Trinity had the game within reach, but the very nature of our late rally took the wind right out of their sails.

What took place in the last term was an amazing reversal of the game to that point – OM’s booted six into the wind, whilst Trinity became the wasteful ones, scoring 2.5. A 46 point margin reflected the difference in the number of scoring shots and time in possession, with OM’s having peppered the goals 39 times to 23, however it really wasn’t until well into this last term that goals to Tom Paule and Simon Beaumont put the game beyond doubt.

Charlie Wilmoth stood firm in defence all afternoon, and Charlie Gardiner, Steve Greene and Simon Beaumont delivered with their experience when it mattered most. Will Harvey fought every contest like it was his last and kept OM’s in the game during periods where Trinity threatened to break away, and Marty Kennon was a solid contributor. Barclay Dixon took on Andrew Ramsden who always looked dangerous, but his win over the Trinity key forward was a huge contribution to the end result on the day.

OLD TRINITY             3.0    8.5    10.6   12.11-83

Congratulations to Simon Beaumont who was awarded the Ian Cordner medal for best afield.

And finally, Congratulations to Mick Lovejoy and his trusty assistant Erwin for a job well done!

RESERVES

Mick Carty’s Ressies were a solid favourite to take out this premiership, but nobody dared underestimate Blacks who challenged all day and never let us get away.

After an even first half, where inaccuracy with the wind was a problem for OMFC, the OM’s 3rd quarter set us up for a great final stanza. Up by just 5 points at half time, every man on the ground was determined not to let Blacks build a lead with the wind in the 3rd quarter. Playing a great brand of running football, we attacked into the wind and managed to increase our margin to a 10 point lead at the last change. The defence had done a sterling job to repel countless Blacks attacks, and now the on balers and forwards had to bring the ship home.

OM’s put the game beyond doubt early, kicking three goals in succession to extend the lead out to 5 goals, before Blacks finished with a couple when the game was all but over.

Finally, Jenks and Gussy who were both in the side’s best players could revel in Premiership glory. The side was brilliantly led by Tim Horne, and Timy Cudlipp booted 4 majors and was also amongst the best players.

OLD MELBURNIANS   1.3     3.7    6.8     9.9-63
UNI BLACKS                2.2     3.2    5.4     7.4-46

UNDER 19’s Grand Final Review

Old Melburnians verses Old Brighton
After our comprehensive win in the 2nd semi against Old Brighton and with a 3-0 record one might think that the game would be a walk in the park for the boys in blue.
Not so indeed as Old Brighton had done their homework and with some added inclusions looked a totally different unit to the one two weeks ago.

The game started at a frantic pace with Brighton pushing hard at the contest but it was the dark blue which opened up with Wischer and Bennett prominent early with some excellent forward play.

ANOTHER GOAL FOR SHARPSHOOTER BENNETT

The backline was also working well repelling a number OB’s raids with Yox, Maccioli, and Dunell providing plenty of good delivery to our forwards.

Steele was on top in the Ruck but Brighton’s rovers were hard to contain and Mattie Marangon, Slade, Webbie and Hatfield worked tirelessly to have OM’s go into quarter time with a 32 point lead.

1st Quarter :        OM’s     6.2          OB          1.2

We opened up well again with both sides trading goals however after big “Al” crashed tackled an OB player the game changed with the umpire providing OB with a length of the field goal. We failed to compose ourselves for the rest of the quarter as OB made us pay on the scoreboard for poor decision making and lack of discipline. Our onballers and backline lacked any direction and with OB pushing hard saw them less than a kick down at half time. Juppie provided a great highlight kicking a beauty from 50 with Hayes busy picking up possessions across half forward.

 2nd Quarter :      OM’s     8.2          OB          7.3

The third quarter saw OB continue where they left off with 3 quick goals after the break and with the momentum with them OM’s looked in trouble and rudderless. It was also interesting to note that the wind had changed and had done a complete turn around now favouring the clubhouse end which OB were kicking to.
The coaching bench sensing the situation swung the changes quick and fast with Carter and Healy moving forward, Levy and Hywood onto the ball, and Jack Slade to CHF immediately saw results with OM’s slamming on 5 goals straight to arrest the impetus away from OB again.

Bennett, May, Armstrong and Carter were once again offering plenty of resistence along with plenty of support from Healy and Wischer.

With siren sounding with OB trailing by 21 points at the last break it looked like we had a real battle on our hands to fight off the rampaging OB’s who just wouldn’t go away. They say Grand Finals are won in 3rd quarters and the question was had OM’s done enough.

3RD Quarter :       OM’s     13.7        OB          10.6

The signs were good early as the OM’s hordes roared with approval as Quennell  kicked a belter from 50 yards it now appeared OB were starting to stagger. Little did we know that this only steeled OB’s resolve further to see them rally with 2 quick goals from the centre to again get within distance of the OM’s.

BEST ON GROUND SAM DUNELL REPELS ANOTHER ATTACK

With the Grand Final on the line both sides threw themselves into every contest with passion however the dark blue looked more composed as OB missed scoring opportunities and targets. The backline led by Yox, Maccioli, A Marangon, Dunell, MCoy, Stubbe and Healy pounced on these lost opportunities and pushed the ball with great gutso to a hungry forward line eager to receive.

3 quick goals to Hatfield, Bennett and Armstrong put the score beyond doubt and snuffed out the OB challenge. They were beaten but not humiliated and credit must go to them for a hard fought contest.
34 points was the difference in the end between these two sides but those that were there will attest to a great contest between worthy Grand Finalists.

The coach said it all at the end “it had been a long enjoyable journey that was filled with many ups and downs culminating in a fantastic day for not only the club but all players, officials and parents”.

FINAL SCORES:        OM’s     17.11.113     OB          12.7.79

Goal Kickers: L. Bennett 6, A. Carter 2, A. Armstrong, M. Marangon, C. Wischer, T. Healey, S. Quennell, P. May, H. Jupp, W. Hatfield, T. Hywood
Best Players: S. Dunell, L. Bennett, P. May, H. Webb, A. Carter, J. Macciolli

OM’s are now in A-Grade in not only the Seniors but the Under 19’s returning once again to the premier division in style with a premiership.

With 2 premierships (3rds/Under 19’s) now in the bag it’s now we hand the baton over to first the Reserves (v Uni Blacks) and then the Seniors (v Trinity) to rewrite the records books and bring home the bacon next weekend.

Go the Dark Blue!!
