Match Report: 3rd XVIII v St Mary’s Salesian

May 25th, 2009

Another contender falls!

The juggernaut that is the 3rds keeps ploughing along defeating fourth placed Salesian’s last Saturday on the Junction Oval. What was picked to be match of the round turned out to be a totally one sided affair from the get go.

Up forward the Melburnians were plucking everything led by Will Harris who kicked an impressive four first quarter goals to set the scene. Nick Amato’s positioning and hard leading gave the OM’s great structure and made it easier for the ball carrier to find a target. The backline was impenetrable with the likes of Marty McCoy and Scotty Kennon rebounding well out of defence giving nothing to the opposition. In the midfield Patty Nestel, Ned Guy and Phil Grundy were in complete control gaining mountains of disposals and plenty of clearances.

It was nice to see the return of Nick Lawler to the 3rds putting on a fine display of ruck work all day while also picking up possessions around the ground. Mark Prowse was dangerous in the forward line always looking goal ward while young Steve Petsinis got plenty of the pill and will be better for it in the coming weeks. Guest and Cumbrae-Stewart had stats a plenty and may not be seen in the 3rds again this season.

The last quarter saw a few interesting moves by the OM’s coaching staff. James Newton had a rare foray forward and took a few nice contested grabs with no major return to speak of. Scott Kennon rounded out his day with three majors in the last term to end with four and cap off a handy game.

The end score card was not nice reading for St Mary’s supporters a whopping 131 point victory to the Junction Oval boy’s.

Another dominating performance from the OM’s and there leaves only one question… Who’s next?
