Ressies Do it for Jenks

May 18th, 2009

The who’s who of Melbourne gathered to the Junction Oval to watch the great Chris ‘Jenga Bus’ Jenkins play his 250th game for the club. It was a huge achievement for the utility full back and two’s captain who began playing for the OM’s back in 1995 when fellow team mates such as Toby Beaumont where still in prep and Mark Hawkins was still an innocent country boy.

The two inspired by a larger than normal crowd and their captain’s milestone put on a dominating performance against St Bernard’s, limiting them to two points for the entire game and ran out 115 point winners. The senior players/old players stood up for their old mate Jenks led by Guss ‘who’s your Daddy’ Waddell, Mark ‘super old creep’ Hawkins, Barclay Dixon and Hugh O’Brian all ensured the game was never in doubt for the Redlegs who consistently improved their lead at every change .  Toby Beaumont enjoyed the run up forward kicking 3 and Will ‘Shep’ Panton will be pushing for 1’s selection after a 35+ possession game and multiple goals.
Perhaps the most exciting part of the game was left to the dying seconds where Jenks, enjoying a ‘run’ up forward, rose from the pack to take mark of the day and slot the ball through the sticks (which sticks is still open for debate) to cap off a memorable day.
Jenks’ men remain undefeated on top of the ladder with a healthy percentage of 274. The only disappointment for the day came with a leg injury to Chris Righetti who was dominant early and the St Bernards boundary umpire who tore his hammy and will be out for at least 4 weeks. We wish them both a speedy recovery.
