The OMs, in eighth position on the ladder, took on Old Camberwell, in seventh position with two more wins, one of which was against the OMs earlier this season. After a great effort against Old Haileybury the previous week, the OMs were well-placed to turn the tables against the Wellers.
The first half was a fairly even affair, with the OMs taking advantage of the breeze in the second quarter to lead by 10 points at half time, whilst the Wellers’ inaccuracy hurt them. Containing the Wellers whilst they had the advantage of the first quarter breeze was to become increasingly important.
The third quarter gave the Wellers the wind advantage, which the Redleg estimated as being worth three goals. Making the most of it, the Wellers kicked six goals for the quarter. The damage could have been worse, but for the efforts of Ed Mitchell on Loats, who had been dangerous. At three quarter time, the Wellers had a 16 point lead, but the OMs were not about to concede defeat.
It was a fantastic effort by the OMs in the final quarter which saw them limit the Wellers to a point. Both sides fought a lengthy battle without scoring a goal, and time was fast running out for the Dark Blues to reel in the margin. However, with the never-say-die attitude which has won them some famous victories in recent years, the OMs fought on. McKie characteristically marked strongly in a pack and goaled. Another goal brought the OMs within striking distance, and when Paddy Nestel goaled he gave the Dark Blues the lead. Excitement machine Righetti snapped from about 15 metres out on the boundary line, hitting the post, but he redeemed himself with a trademark stylish game sealer kicked on the left, on the run, from about 50 metres. With about three minutes remaining, the OMs clung to their lead, and held on for a very important victory.
Seccull had a great day at centre half forward, presenting and marking strongly, and creating opportunities for the OMs’ mosquito fleet. He played in front, and worked hard all day to play a pivotal role in the OMs’ win. Davis, Boyd and Morrison continued their excellent and consistent form in the midfield. Wilmoth yet again also played with skill and tenacity in the middle. Mark Handley played an important role up forward, with three crucial goals.
Under 19s players Oman and Oaten played praiseworthy games in their debuts in the Seniors. Oman was a member of the MGS 1st and 2nd XVIIIs in 2007 and Oaten was a member of the MGS 1st XVIII in 2007. They have made an excellent start in what we hope will be years of loyal service to the Old Melburnians’ Football Club.
Following a bye this weekend, the OMs venture out to Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School to take on top-of-the-ladder Old Essendon which recently suffered a shock loss at the hands of St. Kevin’s. Be there to support the OMs as they take their tenacious brand of football to the home of the league leader.
