Old Scotch 5.3-33
Def. by
All Stars 17.17-119
Best: Berm, Rigga, S. Wetts, Baz, Lawler, E. Wetts
Goals: Rigga 4, Plugga 3, Baina 3, Coops 2, Dazzle 2, H. Tomo, Gabba, Tandy
In perfect conditions the All Stars responded to the questions of form and for the first time this season played the hard, direct football, which reflected the type of game that earned them a top two position in ’07.
From the opening bounce it was certain that the Boys were keen to answer the critics and as Lawler patrolled the skies, the Wettenhalls the hard ball, and Tandy the canteen; you almost felt sorry for the bedraggled red army…almost. Despite the domination by the red legs, inaccuracy in front of goal left the door ajar for a revival by the old rival.
The Boys came out in the second as determined as Gabba on a Saturday night at Arcadia, and the hard men in Berm, Baz and Sampson stepped up and put the fear of God in the withering Scotchies. It was clear by half time that the Clubbies of old were back and it was simply a case of by how much.
After the long break the game was a foregone conclusion but there was no holding back with Ed Wetts tireless life threatening efforts, Faulks’ explosive anger and Rigga’s ego the Scotchies were calling for the mercy rule by the three-quarter time siren. Enter the Foster children; led by Plugga up forward and Jimmy on the wing the Under 19s proved themselves and helped the Clubbies to a 14 goal drubbing of their 150 year old rival.
Special mention goes to the LA Project Paulie Lima who, after injury put an end to his ’07 campaign, had his best match to date and could be a key to the ’08 finals series.
The win was a welcome return to form, now back in the four at 3 and 2, and with the winless Mazenod next week the All Stars juggernaut is well and truly rolling again.
