The 2s usually kick the dew off the ground for the seniors. On Saturday, we helped get rid of some sand and dust from the centre square.
Though we failed to get rid of it all, we did succeed on getting four points with a 17-point win over Old Camberwell.
The margin could have been greater if not for a lapse in the last quarter when Old Camberwell, with the aid of a howling gale, kicked 4.5 to our one goal in the last term.
It was still enough to lift our percentage to an even 100 and put us in the four for the first time this season.
"I like the look of that," captain Dean Osmond remarked to his boss at work on Monday morning after he was caught surfing the internet. "And I got in the best players as well boss."
We did not get off to the greatest of starts when Camberwell kicked the first goal of the game despite us kicking against the wind.
"I thought it could have been a long day in the office," Jenks told his younger brother after the game. "I was getting ready to think up excuses for Carts to send me forward."
But the likes of Ranga Ray, Scott Kennon and Tim Davis started to win plenty of the ball in the middle.
Davo was rewarded with a six-pack for his services but was last seen being questioned by Balwyn constabulary who thought he was an underage drinker.
"I’m really 18," he told the constable. "I left my ID in the tuck shop, I mean by the canteen, I mean in the club rooms. Ask him (pointing to fellow midget Andy Ray), no I mean that guy (pointing to Jenks), he’ll vouch for me."
The other six-pack went to Tom Seccull, known as Tony to the Camberwell hierarchy. He also bagged another six-pack from Camberwell meaning he won’t have to lift beers from the Mount Erica, at least for this week.
It was an emotional occasion for Panna, who capped off his last game for the season with three goals.
"I’m heading overseas lads. That’s it from me. If anyone want my boots, they’re good for kicking goals. I’ll take $100 or nearest bid," Panna told team manager Turns after the game. "I’ll parachute back in in a few months time if I think we’re going to make finals."
Thanks to Nick Russell for boundary umpiring, Matty Lovejoy and his friend for running water and all supporters who braved the cold wind to watch us win.
