APS Round 12 - MGS V Caulfield Grammar School

August 4th, 2007

:: Melbourne Grammar School 1st XVIII Report - By Lurch.

In the final game of the APS season, with the Year 12 MGS boys proudly wearing the MGS footy jumper into battle for the last time, Grammar played an awesome game to fall only a goal shy of beating the 2007 APS premiers.

Despite CGS kicking the first goal of the game with the aid of a strong breeze, Grammar was undaunted, and, kicking against the wind, led by two goals at quarter time. Good use of the footy by MGS saw the Dark Blues up by almost 4 goals at half time, showing the Fields what happens when the Grammar boys play their best footy.

Caulfield was determined to show why it became 2007 premiers by kicking six goals without response in the third quarter, and led at the final change. It set the stage for a classic final quarter in which both schools gave their all, with the Fields only just prevailing. The MGS boys nearly gave themselves the perfect end to the season, and did not fail for lack of trying.

Despite lacking the superstars of the past three seasons, the boys who fought for the Grammar 1st XVIII this year often played well above themselves, beating some premiership contenders in what was the most open APS season for many years. There were one or two avoidable losses, and several classic close games in which luck unfortunately went against MGS more often than it went with it. With the exception of a few games, however, the Grammar boys fought their hardest and were a credit to MGS and those who have gone before them.

In the junior ranks MGS boys are cutting a swathe through their foes, which bodes well for the future of MGS footy. 2008 is the 150th anniversary of MGS and of Australian Rules Football, with MGS and Scotch generally credited with playing the first recognised game of our national code. It’s a big year for Grammar footy in 2008, but for those whose MGS playing careers end this season, we hope to see them join the Old Melburnians Football Club and continue to fight with pride for the Dark Blue along with their school mates.
