Round 11: All Stars V St Kevins

July 7th, 2007

:: All Stars Report - By Tomo.

The All Stars travelled to the bog heap that was the Righetti oval for a chilly encounter with St. Kevin’s. Following the previous weekend’s clubbies fundraiser, a less than ideal week on the track, coupled with atrocious playing conditions, the Stars were well less than prepared for an opposition that whilst second bottom on the ladder were premiers only two years ago

The opening quarter was an ugly affair as both teams attempted to adjust to the mud laden wet weather football. Goals were always going to be rare on a day like this and it took the Stars an agonising 12 minutes to register their first with a quick handball by Tandy opening up the running player in Pipes for his first of the game.

The second quarter left off from the first as the ensuing armwrestle presented a very hard fought but scrappy contest. The Stars appeared to have gained the acendency as the quarter played out but were unable to capitalize on this, spoiling several great opportunities, and heading to the changing rooms with a slim 8 pt lead.

The third term began well for the stars with G, Timmy Burdeu and Wildman controlling the tempo through the middle of the ground whilst down back Eddy Tomo and Schof were leading by example. This hard work was rewarded when Neddy produced the goods with a blatant touched off the boot goal which the umps missed. As the Stars attempted to kick away Skevvies always seemed to have an answer reducing the margin to 7 pts at the last change.

As all to a familiar sight the last quarter would see the Stars produce their best footy for the game. In the back line Wardie, Bird and Hugo provided continuous run and disposable down the ground. In the guts Lawler continued on his merry way dominating every Rucking contest whilst Stu was unstoppable in the wet producing a brilliant quarter which culminated in a stunning on the run goal. Up forward Guesty found his measure with a decisive goal whilst Pipes snapped late for his second goal to put the game beyond doubt.

With the four points secure the Stars are now only a month away from finals football, and with a home fixture against cellar dwellers Mazenod next week the Stars can now really bankroll their bid for a top two spot.
