Round 5: All Stars V Old Scotch

May 26th, 2007

:: All Stars Report - By Newts.

In a cliche-laden atmosphere the Clubbies encountered their traditional rivals, the old foe, the historic enemy, Old Scotch. The older scars of last year’s season-ending two point heartbreak and the fresh wounds from last weeks narrow loss provided ample motivation for a fired-up and focused pre-match.

In gusty conditions the All Stars made good use of the gale against an ultra-defensive Scotch outfit. Despite the extra numbers in the backline Bains, Stu Wettenhall, Guy and Cooper were deadly at ground level snaring five quick goals in the opening stanza.

Into the breeze the backline passed a test of strength with flying colours. Brilliant rebound play from Guthrie, Schofield and Russell and stoic resistance from Ed Tomlinson and Sampson quickly turned Scotch’s advances into retreats. At the long break the OMs held a three goal lead.

With the wind in our sails and at our backs the Clubbies piled on the goals in the third quarter. Spearheads Hurst and Tandy established game-breaking aerial dominance and Rob Lawler remained peerless in the ruck. With our skipper down and out after a sickening clash of heads there was never any question of the game escaping our grasp.

Playing with rediscovered hardness and endeavour the Clubbies were first to the ball and stronger at the contest. Despite a zephyr of resistance from Scotch in the final term the All Stars remained resolute and emerged triumphant. The ghosts of 2006 were laid.
