St. Kevin’s Stunned by Resurrection
A few flashes of brilliance consigned three quarters of ordinary football to the dustbin of history. After a sluggish start in perfect conditions the Club XVIII bandwagon struggled to shift out of neutral. The St. Kevin’s boys harried, tackled and smothered with tenacity but we were our own worst enemy. Woefully inaccurate goal kicking added to the general malaise and at the long break the OMs trailed by more than four goals. Ed Wettenhall was visibly nauseated by our early performance.
After some soul-searching and a much-needed vitamin C injection, the third quarter saw a visible shift in momentum but only minor scoreboard gains. When St. Kevin’s opened the last quarter with a quick mark and goal the margin stood at 28 points.
Then the highlights reel began to roll.
Rob Lawler’s monopoly of the ruck began to pay dividends as Wettenhall, Bains and Tomlinson ran riot at stoppages. Schofield prowled the half-back line with purposeful menace, Jimmy Uting struck fear into several hearts and Cooper proved the spit in the crucible up forward. Straight shooting from Tomlinson, Tandy and Bains narrowed the gap and two in succession from Stu gave the All Stars the lead. In just 15 minutes the St. Kevin’s boys went from cracking celebratory gags to trying desperately to wrest back control of the game, their efforts were in vain.
