:: All Stars Report - By ‘ The Super Star ‘.
Keen to build on the strong round 1effort, the All Stars ventured out to Melbourne University to take on Uni Blues. The Blues knocked off the reigning premiers, the Crocs, in their first start so the pundits were predicting a tight tussle. As the heavens began to open pre-game a scrap seemed inevitable.
Putting aside a ragged opening 5 minutes, the Stars started enterprisingly, disregarding the slippery conditions to post the first 3 majors of the game. Led by the always inspirational Stuey Wettenhall and with great support from the wily veteran Jimmy “The Wild Man” Utting, the Stars attacked hard, their efforts finished off by Tandy.
The second quarter saw the Stars lose focus as the Uni boys began to take control of the game. At this stage the rain intensified making every contest one to savour. Some haphazard kicking and some dour defence led by Berman, Schofield and Tomlinson ensured the Stars maintained a slim 10 point lead at the break.
After some rallying words from Coach Landrigan, one expected the Stars to come out ferociously at the start of the second half. However, 2 quick goals inside the first 5 minutes saw the Blues hit the front for the first time. How would the Stars respond to their first serious challenge of the year? Led by the determined Cooper whose attack at the footy was matched by his sublime soccer goals, the Stars held firm to regain a 2 goal buffer at the last change.
The final quarter was arguably the Stars best. Tough, committed and smart football prevailed. Hursty controlled the rucks and Bainsy got a number of important touches as the Stars eased their way to victory in the end. While the season is in its infancy the signs are encouraging! Next challenge is St Kevins at home.
